Before Farming
We grew up in Minnesota and lived throughout the country and abroad. When we were ready to hang up those wandering shoes and put down roots of our own, the North beckoned. We always lived in cities ~ our families are urban dwellers. It never occurred to us to live rurally. That changed when we had kids and began to look at our food ~ where it came from, what was in it ~ and became dismayed.

Backyard Gardening
So we started gardening again in our urban backyard, resuming what we had done wherever we were, growing a bit of food on patios or tiny backyards. Over the years as our family grew, so did the garden, until we decided to make a shift. We bought the remains of an old farmstead on a bit of land with a solid little house ~ just a small piece of what it once was in its heyday as a working family farm.

Starting A Farm
Not knowing anything more than backyard gardening, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work; clearing land of brush and weeds, removing the remains of collapsed buildings, and pulling 1,000s of feet of buried fence line. We prepped space for market gardens, planted berry bushes and fruit trees, raised chickens on the land, and built a high tunnel and tiny greenhouse. All while raising a family and working off-farms jobs. We now have been growing and selling produce for almost 10 years to our community.

Understanding Seeds
One of our greatest challenges was understanding seeds ~ what survived, grew and produced in a northern growing season? Which seeds could survive a light frost or a hard freeze? When should we really plant when the Spring last frost date was being fickle? Which varieties will actually produce in a short season? Which seeds should be started indoors? And where was the information to help northern growers like us? We have worked through these scenarios and more to help you get started on your journey to growing your own food and self-sufficiency.
It's a journey, filled with surprises and disappointments, delights and even destruction (hail!). But so worth it when you bite into the season's first tomato, bursting with color, flavor and aroma! Or wandering through the garden, munching on the peas and beans plucked from the vine. Or pulling carrots, dusting off the soil and eating it on the spot. The best is walking out to the garden, on 'what's for dinner?' days, and picking the best of the season to make dinner for your family.
There is such a feeling of pride, of accomplishment in that moment of what you can do. That’s the journey we hope to inspire and empower you to be apart of.
